We the People.
When the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787, the young American nation was struggling.
Fifty-five men spent a miserably hot summer hammering out a new system of government. As the summer wore on, many left in disgust.
By September 17, 1787, the last remaining 39 men signed the finished document.
The most famous words of that document were the creation of Gouverneur Morris, a playboy with a wooden leg. Historians today describe the Preamble as Morris’s legacy, his gift, to his nation.

The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution are displayed at the National Archives building in Washington, DC.
If you walk in and look up, you’ll see two giant murals that are as long as a city bus.
The signers of the Declaration are on your left. The signers of the Constitution are on the right. The murals have graced the rotunda since the late 1930s.
One Constitution signer is a tall strapping man who sports a wooden leg.
Gouverneur Morris hailed from a rich New York family. He lost his left leg as a young man after a nasty carriage accident.
Gouverneur was a playboy. His diaries are filled with his exploits.
Gossips said he really lost the leg jumping out of a window to escape a jealous husband who had caught Gouverneur messing with his wife.
The Constitution was signed by its framers on September 17, 1787, and was sent to the state for ratification.
September 17th is celebrated in the USA as Constitution Day.
The charmer with the wooden leg had a way with words. He is credited with transforming the text in the Constitution from legalese into plain, simple language.
He rewrote the original boring intro and bequeathed these words to Americans for all time:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
