1773. The year 342 chests of tea—worth roughly £10,000 then (about $1.7 million today)—were dumped into Boston Harbor.

Legend has it that Sarah Bradlee Fulton, a true "Daughter of Liberty," organized the women who supplied the disguises and the morale for the raid. And when the dust settled, an ancestor of Herman Melville (yes, the author of Moby-Dick) found a few stray tea flakes in his shoes. He saved them in a bottle, preserving a tiny piece of history for generations.

We like to think that on that hot, chaotic day, the only thing more refreshing than a glass of iced lemonade was the knowledge that the King's tea was now fish food. Because a true Patriot dares not sip the Crown's brew.
