The Design: The parchment-colored front features a famous British political cartoon from 1776. After the failed British bombardment of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, London newspapers mocked the Americans by depicting a dainty “Miss Carolina Sullivan” whose hair was adorned with cannons and fortifications. Denise seized upon this satirical name for the title of her book. Our design recalls Miss Sullivan with crenellated battlements and five cannons nestled in her bouffant, defying the empire that tried to silence her.

Tour Immortalized: From Asheville to Oxford, Miss., we celebrate and thank every bookstore and city hosting the author on the back. This design celebrates the community of readers and booksellers who make these events possible.

A Collector’s Item: We will not alter the design after the 2026 tour concludes. We hope to issue a Fall 2026 edition, and another to celebrate the paperback tour.
